celebrating Dressember
Or should I say 'Hello, Dressember'?What is that, you ask? Did you read that correctly? You did.
It's the first of the month, and for my 'first on the first' - for the entire month, in fact - I will be participating in the annual tradition known as 'Dressember'.
Started in 2009 as a 'celebration of femininity and beauty', Dressember is simply the wearing of dresses every day for the month of December. Not really a stretch, for those of you who know me IRL. (And for those of you who don't: I wear a dress or skirt every day already. Convenient for this little challenge, isn't it?)
This year, however, Dressember has taken on an additional dimension: supporting the International Justice Mission in their work to rescue victims of slavery, sexual exploitation, and other forms of violent oppression. IJM is on the frontlines of the fight for freedom and justice in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Working with local officials, the IJM lawyers, investigators, and aftercare professionals free and care for victims, prosecute perpetrators, and ensure that public justice systems - police, courts, and laws - effectively protect the poor. Founded in 1997 by Gary Haugen, a lawyer at the US Department of Justice and the UN 'Investigator in Charge' after the Rwandan genocide, the IJM 'seeks to restore to victims of oppression the things that God intends for them: their lives, their liberty, their dignity, the fruits of their labor.'
